Students at Canberra and North Canberra Hospitals receive diverse, high-quality clinical training through rotations, placements, and seminars.

Students will have high-quality learning opportunities across both hopsitals in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness within a professional environment, offered through teaching clinics, simulation labs and real-world placements.

Students attend lectures and interactive seminars in large groups, and practice procedural and clinical skills in smaller groups.

Clinical placements at Canberra Hospital  and North Canberra Hospital offer exposure to a wide variety of disciplines including acute inpatient and day services, outpatient services, women’s and children’s services, paediatrics and pathology.

Throughout the year, students rotate through different units within the hospitals where they have the opportunity to shadow doctors, and speak with and examine patients.

Students interact with state-of-the-art equipment and are immersed in a strong culture of teaching and research. A wide variety of cases are seen while working alongside some of the territory’s most accomplished medical specialists and researchers.

The approach is to immerse students within a team where they will become part of the day-to-day activities. They are encouraged to integrate into the life of the hospital and join clinical meetings, ward rounds and various outpatient clinics.

Many of Canberra Hospital’s junior doctors are a fantastic source of information, inspiration and practical tips for medical students. They are often willing to give their time to students, having been in a similar position.

Students are encouraged to attend Grand Round seminars where they will hear about the latest clinical research, and participate in the Canberra Health Annual Research Meeting (CHARM) which showcases how research can contribute to a learning health system through discovery, collaboration and translation.

In addition, students have a range of placement opportunities offered through Canberra Health Services including the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, located on the Canberra Hospital campus and the University of Canberra Hospital (UCH), which offers inpatient rehabilitation - providing specialised and dedicated care to various people in the community.
