General Practice teaching in the MChD program

The Australian National University and ACT Health Directorate jointly fund the Academic Unit of General Practice.

Ensuring medical students have quality training experiences in General Practice is crucial to medical students in their journey to becoming a doctor. General practitioners are at the centre of the healthcare system. Australians see their GP more than any other health professional, with nine out of 10 people seeing their GP at least once a year.

In year 3 of the postgraduate 4 year program, students are rotated into 6-week urban GP placements in Canberra and 6-week rural placements in the surrounding South East NSW region. During their urban GP placement students spend 3 days a week for 6 weeks being part of the GP clinic they are allocated to, learning generalist medicine and person centred practice. Many of our alumni have returned a few years later inspired to train as a GP registrar at the same practice.

The Academic Unit of General Practice supports teaching GPs across our teaching practices in Canberra and Queanbeyan. We offer workshops, seminars and practice visits to support our GP teachers in their teaching role. GP teachers can also apply for Clinical academic title and contribute to the more formalised parts of our GP teaching program. GP supervisors can claim (PIP) Practice Incentive Payments and the ACT Health Teaching payments, (EISGP) Education Infrastructure Support Grant Payment, through the Academic Unit of General Practice.
