Indigenous health stream
The School offers the opportunity for medical students to join a small cohort of students in the Indigenous Health Stream.
This will provide the opportunity for committed students to undertake targeted research and clinical placements, working towards expanded clinical placement in Indigenous health settings.
The Indigenous Health Stream was recognised in 2015 with the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Education for a program that enhances learning.
In 2014 the Indigenous Health Stream was also awarded a College award for a program that enhances learning.
The vision of the Indigenous Health Stream is to prepare a medical workforce skilled in delivering Indigenous health. This action by the School of Medicine and Psychology works towards closing the gap between the health of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The School of Medicine and Psychology offers a whole of curriculum approach to Indigenous health teaching, for all medical students, but with an expanded suite of learning opportunities for Indigenous Health Stream students.
Through its curriculum, the School of Medicine and Psychology offers both the bio-medical and socio-cultural aspects of Indigenous health which complements the Indigenous holistic approach to health.
Medical students undertaking the Indigenous Health Stream will follow the same curriculum objectives, content and examinations as their peers.
The School of Medicine and Psychology envisages the Indigenous Health Stream will provide strong partnerships in medical student teaching between the School of Medicine and Psychology and Indigenous communities, Indigenous health service providers and other organisations.
