Growing evidence suggests increased prevalence of sleep disturbances in patients with eating disorders and increased risk of eating disorders in patients with sleep disturbances. This bidirectional relationship suggests a common pathophysiological pathway underpinning both behaviours. In this co-design project, we hypothesise that tryptophan deficiency underpins the bi-directional relationship between anorexia nervosa and sleep disturbances and that it may be an avenue of focus for therapeutic interventions.

We are currently recruiting scholars to work on a project investigating the concept of a protein called alpha-lactalbumin (consumed via a drink) that has been shown to improve subjective and objective measures of sleep quality through the serotonin/melatonin pathway. We would be interested in investigating the effect of the protein on the sleep of people with eating disorders.

The role requires hands-on project involvement so the candidate needs to be in Canberra or willing to move to Canberra.

If you are interested, please send via email to the primary investigator(s) the items listed below:

  1. CV
  2. A cover letter documenting relevant research experience and interest in the project
