The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented demand on both healthcare and workers and systems around the globe. This means that the decisions made by those on the frontline of our health services are likely being effected by factors which have not been addressed by previous research but require us to better understand them for future responses. The ANU is conducting a rapid appraisal in order to explore health care workers’ perceptions and experiences of responding to the COVID-19 epidemic in the ACT.

The project is part of a large cross-national study including sites in Europe and the Americas. Our research to be compared across nations, informing an international perspective on the effects of the pandemic for workers and healthcare systems. By understanding the factors that influence healthcare worker experiences and decisions, this project hopes to better inform future pandemic responses and to better curtail the demands placed on individual workers and healthcare systems.

The study is collecting information from local ACT based healthcare workers via telephone or video conference. Up to 60 healthcare workers from both primary and tertiary healthcare sectors who have been involved with the COVID-19 response are invited to conduct an interview with us.
