Clinical Professor Brian K. Owler AM is a Sydney-based neurosurgeon. Professor Owler offers a comprehensive neurosurgical service covering both paediatric and adult conditions. He is an Australian trained neurosurgeon with extensive experience in the treatment of cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions. Special interests include tumours of the brain and spine, spinal disorders, hydrocephalus and other CSF circulation disorders.

Prof Owler is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Norwest Private Hospital, The Mater Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

He has a PhD from the University of Sydney and performed research at the Academic Neurosurgery Unit at the University of Cambridge. Research topics have included new treatments for the management of hydrocephalus and pseudotumor cerebri, brain tumours and deep brain stimulation surgery. He is a Patron of the Hydrocephalus Association of NSW.

Prof Owler was President of the Australian Medical Association from 2014-16 and is a past President of AMA NSW. Along with his interests in clinical work, he is interested in public health advocacy. This includes the RTA / NSW AMA Road Safety ‘Don’t Rush’ campaign, lobbying to prevent childhood injury such as falls from windows and improving pool safety. He is also a Vice-Patron of Road Safety Education.

In 2018 Professor Owler was recognised for his work by being made a Member of the Order of Australia, General Division, for significant service to medicine through the leadership and administration of professional medical organisations, and to education.
