Virtually all major discoveries in neuroscience for the last 100 years have been underpinned by an increasingly detailed understanding of the architecture and connectivity of the central nervous system. We introduce herein HumanBrainAtlas, an initiative to construct a highly detailed, open-access segmentations of the living human brain. Combining high-resolution in vivo MR imaging and in-depth delineations previously only available on histological preparations.

Drs. Mark Schira and Steve Kassem are principal investigators in the Human Brain Atlas team (hba.neura.edu.au). Mark Schira is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong where he leads the Schira Lab (https://schiralab.com). He is an expert in anatomy of the visual system and his research group focuses on visual perception and functional imaging. He is responsible for project conceptualization, management, publication, and communication for the Human Brain Atlas, He is also key responsible for data acquisition, processing, and visualizations. Steve Kassem is currently a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. George Paxinos. Steve brings his skills on histological and MRI anatomy to the project. He is an emerging leader in brain mapping and works on the delineations and organization of the human brain atlas.
