Susan Wearne is Senior Medical Adviser in the Health Workforce Division in the Department of Health. She is a part-time GP at the East Canberra General Practice where she helps supervise ANU medical students.

Susan graduated from The University of Southampton, England and then trained as a GP in Northamptonshire and Cheshire. She was a partner in training practices in Manchester and York and taught at Leeds University from 1995-2000. In 1998 she was a Visiting Fellow in the Cochrane Centre for Family Practice in Adelaide.

In 2000 Susan moved to Alice Springs. As Senior Lecturer with Flinders University, she taught Masters students in remote health practice and clinical education. Susan was inaugural Chair of Northern Territory General Practice Education and Chair of the Central Australian Division of Primary Health Care. She was the senior medical educator for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ online learning platform. She also worked for the Remote Vocational Training Scheme, and was awarded her PhD on remote supervision during GP training from Maastricht University in 2015.

Susan was awarded a Flinders University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and Innovation in University Teaching in 2006 and the ‘Most outstanding speaker’ prize at the National Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health Conference in 2004. She received a Choice Critics award from Medical Education in 2016, for her work in peer review. McGraw-Hill publishers listed her book ‘Clinical Cases for General Practice Exams’ as a best-seller and a fourth edition is scheduled for publication in 2019.
