The Bega Valley Library was a hive of activity during Science Week as nine enthusiastic ANU long term rural medical students delivered a series of hands-on, interactive activities.

The event welcomed people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a space where learning felt like play.

Guests had the chance to rotate through a variety of lively stations designed to both entertain and inform.

From checking blood pressure and exploring the effect of food on glucose levels at The Body Interactive activity, to picking up infection control tips during Germ Busters, there was something for every curious mind.

The highlight for many was the Snake Bite Adventure Story, an immersive storytelling session where young explorers were guided through what to do, and what not to do, in a real-life snake bite emergency.

The local children were more than eager to volunteer, especially if it meant playing the role of the snake!

Bega-based long term rural medical student Victoria Westenfelder relished the chance to connect with her community.

“I really enjoyed the Science Week event. It was amazing to see so many people of all ages turn out to learn more about the human body,” Victoria said.

“Everyone was enthusiastic, asking lots of great, curious questions and getting involved in the hands-on activities. The blood pressure cuffs were a huge hit. The event was a highlight of my rural year.”

Fellow student Joe Rangiah agreed. “Science Week at the Bega Library was just as much fun for us, as it was for the kids. They asked some awesome, albeit challenging, questions. Being asked how to bandage a snake bite on your nose was not something I had any idea how to answer!

“The day was a huge success. We had a full house all day. All the students were great, very organised and professional, and people loved the activities. We had many people approach us on their way out saying thank you and what a great day it was.” said Bega Library Learning and Engagement Officer, Sugita Wahl.

The students expressed their gratitude to the Bega Library staff, South East Regional Hospital SRMO Dr Dimi Kasthurirathne, and ANU RCS administrator Deborah Ferguson for their support in bringing the event to life.
