There are three potential mechanisms of maternal transfer of SARS CoV-2 to the newborn infant:
- Intrauterine transmission through transplacental hematogenous spread or viral particles in amniotic fluid that are ingested or inhaled by the fetus. This mode of transmission appeared less likely in 2020.This Webinar will highlight a few sick MIS-C Neonates (transplacental hematogenous transfer of SARS- CoV-2 IgG Antibodies) successfully managed over the last 3-4 months suggesting that this mode of transmission is possible.
- Intrapartum transmission after exposure to maternal infected secretions or feces around the time of birth.
- Postpartum transmission from an infected mother, family member, or health care worker. Transmission from an infected mother is more likely from respiratory secretions and unlikely from breast milk.
