“Wouldn’t it be nice if we could design research in a way that shifts participants from being passive ‘respondents’ to being interested and engaged ‘participants’?
Conal completed his PhD at the Research School of Psychology in 2019 and started working as a lecturer in the Master of Professional Practice program in 2020. Today, he will explore some of the ongoing challenges with collecting survey data and how Conal and collaborators from the ANU (Dr Boris Bizumic), Grand Valley State University (Dr Todd Williams), and Otago University (Dr Martin Sellbom) have integrated participant feedback to stimulate participant engagement. Through utilising RStudio’s Shiny framework, they built a simple web applet and by advertising through ANU media (special thanks to Rachel Curtis and Sana Qadar) gathered data from over 8,000 participants. He will discuss how this was built, and present preliminary data to emphasise the benefits of having participants care about their results. Best of all, you can do it to! Conal will briefly outline a skeleton of your pathway to also making your research “Shiny”.
